MEETINGS & EVENTS 2011
Speaker meetings take place at the W.I.C. Hall, Newton Ferrers 7.00 for 7.30pm on the last TUESDAY of each month. Visitors are most welcome to attend all meetings for which there is a charge of £2.00.
25th January – Stevie Rogers: ‘Using Shape and Colour in the Garden’. Stevie is from a family
of gardeners and initially studied environmental sciences. She began and developed the much acclaimed Fast Rabbit Farm with her ex-partner. Five years ago she split this with Alan and now retains the nursery, farm and landscaping business under the name of Ash Tree Farm and Nursery. At Ash Tree Farm Stevie has created a new and very different garden which will be open to the public under the NGS scheme in 2011. Her landscaping business specialises in ‘natural’ gardens. Amongst her several garden design projects she was responsible for the renovation of the Edwardian garden at Blackpool Sands for Sir Geoffrey Newman and still maintains this fascinating garden. She runs a number of courses at Ash Tree Farm for the Devon County Council and AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
22nd February – Toby Buckland: ‘Gardeners’ World, Greenacre and Me’.
Toby is a real gardener and his passion comes across in his presenting, writing and designs for his garden practice. He is known for his light-hearted, hands-on approach and for his artistic garden features made from plants and recycled materials. He trained and worked as a rose and pinks nurseryman and gardener before qualifying in landscape and amenity management at Greenwich University’s partner institution, Hadlow College, Kent. He later took a post at The University of Cambridge Botanic Garden. His speciality is fruit and vegetable growing which he does with his usual flair at his South Devon home. He has published a number of books and is a regular contributor to gardening magazines and the gardening sections of national papers. Toby believes in supporting local gardening societies and has agreed to talk to us for a reduced fee. If you wish to show your appreciation for this please ‘blog’ for Toby on the BBC website – or write a letter. This talk will be followed by wine and nibbles. * ENTRY BY TICKET
29th March – Jane Knight: ‘Eden Project Landscape – Inside and Out’ Jane is a landscape architect with a wide range of experience having worked in the USA in the 1980’s, Hong Kong in the 90’s and around the UK in between. She has been at Eden Project since 2002, 18 months after its opening. She has worked on all the new developments within the ‘pit’ as well as several of Eden’s outreach programmes. This has taken her to places as varied as prisons, the Chelsea Flower Show, a former war zone in Kosovo and the diamond mines of South Africa. Jane’s talk will give members an insight into her interesting work at Eden as well as their ‘growing’ projects further afield.
26th April – Noel Kingsbury: ‘Men and women in the garden – do we garden differently?’ Noel is an internationally respected garden writer. He is best-known for his promotion of a ‘naturalistic’ approach to planting design and has written some 20 books on various aspects of plants and gardens, several in collaboration with designer and plantsman, Piet Oudolf. He has completed a PhD at Sheffield University undertaking research into the integration of ecology, landscape and horticulture. He regularly contributes to the gardening section of the Daily Telegraph, Gardens Illustrated and a number of other publications. He is currently developing his own 4 acre garden near Hay-on-Wye. His talk will be part horticultural, part philosophical part sociological and mostly fun! This talk will be followed by wine and nibbles. * ENTRY BY TICKET

27th September – Sara Hills: ‘Wild Medicine – from your garden’. Sara is a qualified medical herbalist following five years of training, practical clinical experience and rigorous exams. Apart from her clinical practice Sara runs local workshops where participants forage for wild food in gardens and hedgerows to make tasty salads, soups and pesto, for example, as well as home-grown remedies. Her illustrated and interactive talk will help us to identify delicious and efficacious plants in our own gardens. Sara may be better known to you as the person who makes our local school garden the success that it is – together with Sarah Cattermole.
25th October AGM in W.I.C. Hall, Newton Ferrers
This will be followed by a short talk by a YGS member, then wine & nibbles
29th November – Rosemary Howell: ‘The Work of the Devon Gardens Trust’ Rosemary Howell who spoke in 2010 on her own lovely garden Lukesland, is returning to talk to us about the work of the Devon Gardens Trust. The Trust exists to give advice and support to garden owners and the Local Authorities on planning and other issues that affect our historic gardens. Practical help is also on offer, for example work has been carried out by Trust members on the formal garden at Langdon Court near Wembury and the Grade 1 registered Repton garden at Endsleigh, near Tavistock. Mrs Howell is boning up on how to use PowerPoint in order to give us a chance to learn more about these projects and other aspects of the work of the Trust.
