I am doing the "Family Tree Thing" and have a major problem in tracking an auntie whose last known address was "Emptiene" Court Road, Newton Ferrers in 1981, where she lived for many years. Her details are: Hilda Kathleen Clemow ne King Born 4 October 1911 in Devonport Married John Geoffrey Clemow, October 1942 in Tavistock. Had a daughter Julia, born 1946 and married Robert Thomas in 1965. He was in the Royal Navy (an engineer) and they had 2 children and were last known to be based in Scotland. Julia would have spent her early education in Newton Ferrers. John died in Greenbank Hospital, Plymouth in April 1981. Hilda was an artist and he a gardener/odd-job man. I only meet Hilda and John once, as my father was in the Royal Navy and moved about and I now live, just North of London. I have been unable to find any trace of her since she reported he husband's death, and up to 2006 it appears she had not died. I do not have access to death records after 2006. If she was alive now she would be almost 102. Can anyone help me please with any info?

I grew up in Lymington, Hants, and my wife here in San Francisco. We are planning to move to Devon or Cornwall from just north of San Francisco for 6 months in 2013, probably April - September. I may well end up working for various UK national magazines and I have a book project possibility. My wife is a voice coach, academic and author and is also completing a book. We do not smoke. We are looking for a 6 month furnished rental of a small house or cottage, with a garden, preferably within walking distance of river frontage or a harbor as I am a sailor and expect to have a small boat. (I was the Commodore of my local yacht club in 2011-2012) We would prefer a house that is not in a busy town. We would need a room we could set up as an office, and probably two bedrooms (one for guests). We are looking for an older house with character rather than a holiday bungalow style. I know a furnished let for 6 months limits our options, and that the area is dominated by short term summer rentals. We will consider anything between Falmouth and Exmouth but ideally between Helston and Dartmouth. Our budget is up to £2500 a month, but we might consider more for exactly the right property. We have 2 well-behaved dogs that are crate trained and NEVER climb on furniture; a german wire-haired pointer and a lab/coon hound mix and they might come with us. CAN YOU HELP WITH MY RESEARCH PROJECT? I am a second year undergraduate at Oxford University reading Geography. I'm currently in the process of planning my dissertation. I'm writing my research project on how the tide impacts everyday life in communities. Naturally, I thought of Newton and Noss! In order to investigate these themes I would like to conduct short interviews with residents of both villages to see how the tide and the Voss impact their lives. For the study I need to talk to a variety of residents, for example: • Elderly residents who have lived here most of their lives; • People who have moved to the villages from other parts of the country; • Young families, perhaps with children at the local school; • Anyone who crosses the Voss on a daily basis, for whatever reason; • Anyone who uses the estuary/sea as part of their livelihood. Although I live elsewhere, I have been coming to Newton & Noss on holiday since I was about four years old and so love and know the villages well. Roving Connect service comes to Newton and Noss with affordable housing in mind South Hams Connect, which aims to link rural communities with a range of public and voluntary services, is taking to the road and will bring news of new affordable homes in your area. The roving service will be visiting Newton Ferrers in the Council's recycling road show van on Tuesday May 22 and setting up opposite the Tea Rooms 10am - 11.30am, before moving on to Noss Mayo and setting up in the South Hams District Council Car Park between 12noon and 1.30pm. As well as the normal roving services we will provide an information point for South Hams Housing and Enabling Officer Cassandra Harrison to answer questions on the Village Housing Initiative which is delivering 14 affordable homes to be built at Parsonage Road, Newton Ferrers this summer. Cassandra will be able to advise you on finding a home to meet your needs and answer queries on the waiting lists and how the new homes will be allocated to local people. Our Customer Service Advisor and a member of the Recycling Team will also be on hand for tips on composting at home or for any of your service questions. Roving Connect will then move on to Holbeton Village Hall Car Park between 2.30pm - 3.45pm. Delivery firms hit by thieves Monday, August 29, 2011 POLICE are hunting burglars who hit two delivery companies in the city. The thieves struck the Newnham industrial estate in Huxley Close, Plympton, in the early hours of August 22. Investigators believe the burglars forced their way through a fire door and then into two offices before stealing a number of items. They went on to take a 7.5 tonne box van with Lewis Day signs on the side which was later recovered from Yealm Road in Newton Ferrers the same morning. The signs which were attached to the vehicle have been removed and Police would like to know if anyone has come across them. Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the industrial estate on the morning of the burglary or who may have seen the box van travelling from Plympton to Newton Ferrers the same day. I was born in Noss, my parents met and married there, my grandad renovated and was the landlord of The Ship or the Globe as it was known then , in the 60's and grandmother is buried there. We moved to Surrey when i was three, and used to travel back every other weekend until I was 8 when my grandfather moved away. i've been back a few times, and it is the only place I feel at home, it holds my earliest and dearest memories. I've lived all over the place, infact my current home is Alexandria in Egypt, but nothing calms me like being back in Noss and Newton. I'm in the UK during the summer, and am looking for a let from 20th (ish)July - 20th (ish) August, so for a month period as I have to return to my life in Egypt. I have four kids and a husband in tow, and we're firm no smokers. Does anyone know of a let for a Noss gal at a reasonable price?! I'm looking at £1k for the month, is that possible? I am writing a book on my grandfather, John Iliffe Poole who was the reading room steward from the 1930's to 1950's who lived in Glen Cot and the adjacent tied cottage with my grandmother Winifred. They held 'open house' at Glen Cot for up to 70,000 service men and women and I have the visitors' books, writings, poems and drawings from that time. Has anyone any information or memories of that time? My mother was Barbara Poole and she married RAF Fl/Lt Witt Wittridge at Holy Cross Church in 1947. My grandfather had a laryngectomy operation in 1923 and became the longest surviving laryngectomee and he died in 1979.
