Vivian Charles Jackson was born on 16 January 1899 in Newton Ferrers, the son of Charles, a fisherman, and Ellen Jackson.  He was baptised at Holy Cross Church on 17 January 1897.

 

At present, no details are available of his military service.  At the time of his death he was a member of the 1st /8th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment.  This battalion was raised in Newport, Isle of Wight in August 1914, and was known as the Isle of Wight Rifles, Princess Beatrice’s. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission database records that he died in Egypt on 24 January 1920 aged 21.  He is remembered with honour in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, and also on the headstone of his sister Dora Carpenter in Holy Cross churchyard.
