Arthur George Millman Luscombe was born in 1919, the
son of George and Ethel Luscombe of Chudleigh in Devon. At this time there is no further information
concerning the family background of this soldier, nor is it known how his name
came to be on the Newton Ferrers War Memorial.
What is known is that in October 1944 he was serving
with 55 (The Suffolk & Norfolk Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal
Artillery. This was a Territorial Army
regiment which, on landing in Normandy, formed part of 49th
(West Riding) Infantry Division. On 29
October 1944 the division was fighting to capture Roosendaal in southern Holland. Gunner Arthur Luscombe died
on this day aged 25, and is remembered with honour in Schoonselhof Cemetery (Plot III.F.6) near Antwerp.
