GEORGE R. LANGFORD HAWKS, MC

George Ronald Langford Hawks was born in 1905, the son of Lieutenant Colonel F W and Mrs Hawks who lived at No 1, Yealm Road.  No further information about his early years is available at this time.

 

In 1942 he was serving with 1 HAA[1] Regiment, Royal Indian Artillery, forming part of the Singapore garrison.  The Japanese attack on the final Singapore defensive perimeter began on 12 December 1942, and a troop of 1 HAA Regt is recorded as fighting with small arms on 13 December.  It was on this day that Major George Hawks was killed in action aged 36.

 

He is remembered with honour on the Singapore Memorial, and also on the Hawks family memorial cross in Holy Cross Churchyard.
